During the Battle of Guningtou in 1949, Kinmen residents faced the threat of death every day. Grandpa told me after this bloody fighting, there were plenty of corpses scattered on the ground. With the fertilization of the corpses, the potatoes were really big and great the next year. In that severe time, even most residents didn’t want to eat sweet potatoes, but they needed to eat them to survive the war.
